Background:

From Manufacturing to Mixed Use Development: A River Brownfield Story

The former ALCO industrial site in Schenectady, was for many years an abandoned and decaying industrial river side eyesore.  A local Developer saw the benefits of a future site developed to provide river access to the public and residents.  The NYSDEC Brownfield Clean-up program was used as the vehicle to move this former locomotive and tank manufacturing site, to one of Schenectady’s transformational developments incorporating hotels, townhomes, apartments, a marina and harbor, and the new Rivers Casino.  Scott Nostrand, from Barton & Loguidice, will describe how the Brownfield Cleanup program resulted in the investigation and remediation of the site, in the midst of a fast-paced design and construction project which has truly re-energized this historic American City.

Scott Nostrand, P.E., is a Senior Vice President at Barton & Loguidice, and is the Division Leader of B&L’s Environmental Group.  Mr. Nostrand has spent the past 30 years of his professional career blending engineering with environmental sciences, resulting in a robust consultancy providing services in environmental site investigation and remediation, ecological sciences, industrial hygiene, geological sciences and environmental consulting. The former past Treasurer of the AWMA Central NY Chapter, Mr. Nostrand is pleased to present to the breakfast meeting.  A graduate of Cornell University, Scott still resides in Ithaca with his wife, Valerie, and is amazed (and proud) that he convinced his two sons to enter the field of engineering.
